Mitigation of Climate Change, Summary for Policymakers, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR6, 2022)

The IPCC AR6 (2022) report shows that there is a greater than 50 percent chance to limit warming to 1.50C with no or limited overshoot (see figure above) if right policies are in place assuming immediate action from 2020 compared to the trend from implemented policies until 2020. With the Safeguard Mechanism changes proposed by the Australian Government, there is a huge potential for the heavy industry sector to reduce global carbon emissions and to reach net zero.

Capturing carbon and producing value added materials can prevent CO2 emission levels going up. It can prevent the emission generation when extracting and transporting virgin finite resources from the environment. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA, 2022) carbon capture for producing materials is considered as a two-way solution to climate crisis, such as mitigating the climate crisis while creating economic stability for businesses. As supply chain issues for importing materials and adjusting to Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) when exporting materials to overseas are increasingly becoming the norm.

Could this solution be considered as a Nature Positive outcome for the Planet to regenerate?
