Industrial Resource Management (IRM)

The IPCC 2022 report shows that in 2019 approximately 24% (14 GtCO2-eq) of the global total net anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from industry were identified as Scope 1. This latest IPCC report shows that there is huge potential for industry to reduce global carbon emissions, to play a role in limiting global warming to 2oC, to embrace regenerative principles, and to move to a net zero society.

With a focus on industrial activities, IRM is a practice that directs modern thinking towards sustainable resource management, and it considers elements such as:

  • whether a certain product is really needed
  • how a product can be designed to maximise functionality
  • how a product’s negative environmental impacts can be minimised through life cycle assessment methodology.

Industrial Symbiosis (IS)

IS engages an Industrial Ecosystem of diverse industrial organisations and society in a network to foster eco-innovation for mutual benefit based on Natural Ecosystem principles.  This type of symbiosis could be much more than mere by-product exchanges between industries co-located or geographically close to each other.  It is the result of developed relationships between the partners of different industries involved, which allow sharing of information, risks, and benefits. Because of this process, outcomes such as ‘reputation’, ‘licence to operate’, ‘market opportunities’, ‘innovation’ emerge as intangibles in addition to quantifiable economic and environmental benefits.  Some of these intangible social benefits essentially lead to economic benefits (in other terms, economic sustainability).  IS is viewed as a framework to achieve CE and decarbonisation in Europe, and Environmental Wisdom is helping to achieve this in Australia.

Circular Economy (CE)

There are several major schools of thought around CE, they are the Industrial ecology of Reid Lifset and Thomas Graedel; and Biomimicry by Janine Benyus; Natural Capitalism by Amory and Hunter Lovins and Paul Hawken and the Blue economy systems approach by Gunter Pauli.  Others are, Performance economy, by Walter Stahel; “An industrial system that is restorative or regenerative by intention and design”, by Ellen Mac Arthur Foundation.  One thing is sure, if society is to move towards CE, we all need to do our bit to reduce our reliance on the world’s finite resources.  At Environmental Wisdom we are helping our clients to be CE champions!

Carbon Accounting and Management (CAM)

Reducing the output of greenhouse gas emissions is one of the most critical responses to climate stability. It plays a critical role in implementing the climate commitments. Environmental Wisdom helps clients by providing strategic advice and practical support to:

  • Define and manage organisational carbon footprint and analysis of current scenario.
  • Identify and implement process efficiencies.
  • Assist in finding low carbon products and services.
  • Implement sustainable solutions using regenerative practices.
  • Set meaningful targets for achieving biodiversity, using Nature based Solutions.

In the year to March 2022, Australian National inventory emissions per capita were 18.9 t carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) per person and Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions for the year to be 487.1 Mt CO2-e as per the quarterly update report.  The Australian Government has already set the overall emission reduction target at 43% below 2005 levels by 2030 and net zero by 2050. This policy target suggests the Government believes its current mechanism will not achieve sufficient emission reductions in time to reach net zero by 2050, and the calling from industry, business and experts supports this.

According to the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), reforms to the earlier Safeguard Mechanism is necessary to reduce emission limits “predictably and gradually on a trajectory consistent with achieving Net Zero by 2050”.  The current mechanism applies to Australian industrial facilities that emit 100,000 CO2-e or more annually. Environmental Wisdom has performed the first phase of this work for one of its clients and they are on their way to implementing their net zero projects.

Nature Positive Assessment

There are solutions that industries can participate in, both improving the biodiversity and the climate change targets according to UNFCCC in its report ‘Race to Zero Dialogues’, 2020.  It recommends Nature Based Solutions and its pivotal role in the fight against the current climate crisis where industries can play a part as leaders in addition to reducing GHG emissions at the local level. Nature based solutions can contribute to maintaining biodiversity and carbon stocks. The report shows that coordinating priority areas to conserve both biodiversity and carbon stocks is key to meeting ambitious goals for both nature and climate.  It highlights areas where global conservation action can deliver the most to achieve biodiversity goals and mitigate climate change.

The United Nations Environment Program’s report ‘Strengthening Synergies: How action to achieve post-2020 global biodiversity targets can contribute to mitigating climate change’ also stresses the Nature-Based Solution process is based on inclusive decision making and recognises that the land-rights of indigenous peoples and local communities are crucial to effectively address climate change and bio-diversity loss.  For example, the report finds that conserving 30% of land in strategic locations could safeguard 500 giga tonnes of carbon stored in vegetation and soils.  Biodiversity and Climate Security benefits of recycled water is one of Environmental Wisdom’s projects.

Net Positive Carbon Capture

The International Energy Agency (IEA) stated in its “Energy Technology Perspective Series”, 2022 report that “even with the challenges the world faces today, energy systems around the world could be transitioned onto sustainable pathways with the right technologies”.  Strategies recommended by the IEA included the development of Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) for various products.  The development and implementation of CCU technologies has been on the rise globally due to its potential for meeting net zero targets in the heavy industrial sector. Environmental Wisdom has assisted in building a long-term plan to achieve this outcome.

Sustainability Assessment

The ‘Six Capitals Model’ (SCM) is a model for measuring sustainability, and features matrices for Natural, Eco-system, Human, Community, Financial and Manufactured capitals.  Developed by the founder of Environmental Wisdom to evaluate the extent of project sustainability in industrial areas where IS is present, the model has been widely used for measuring and reporting sustainability.  Providing the clients with an evaluation of their global to local sustainability utilising an integrated systems approach enables them to determine which actions are contributing to their sustainability, and which are not.

Life Cycle Impact and Benefit Assessment, and Third-Party Review

Capturing and storing carbon can assist in the prevention of rising global CO2 emission levels.  It can help to limit the unnecessary extraction of the planet’s finite resources. According to IEA, this is considered a mitigating factor toward averting a climate crisis, while creating economic stability for businesses facing supply chain issues from overseas.  This can be considered as ‘Nature Positive’ outcome for the Planet.  The assessment of Lifecycle Benefits is one of our projects, where Environmental Wisdom conducted a third party review for a client, and we are in the process of doing further work in this area.

Life Cycle Impact

Capability Statement

At Environmental Wisdom, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive solutions for industrial resource management while promoting wisdom in environmental and emission management. Based in Perth, Western Australia, we focus on sustainable services that contribute to a healthier planet.

Work with Us

Environmental Wisdom believes in an Earth-centered worldview that all humans are part of nature, and we exist for all species' welfare. Nature and all species have inherent value, and these should not be abused or lost to extinction. Our prosperity depends on learning how nature sustains itself and integrating those lessons into how we think and act. For this reason, we provide solutions and support to our clients to reach their potential in maintaining a healthy and regenerative planet.
